One of the most common questions I hear about PowerGUI is: OK, PowerGUI is a great free console for Exchange 2007, but what about 2000 and 2003? And I never really had a good answer to that – after all PowerShell only ships with 2007.
However, a couple of PowerGUI users out there have actually found a way to use PowerGUI to manage Exchange 2000 and 2003:
- Nicolas Blank is using it to retrieve Exchange 2003 data via WMI.
- Fibu and Kirk have a thread in AD PowerShell discussion forums on restricting mail-enabled groups to authenticated users on Exchange 2003 with AD cmdlets.
Both AD cmdlets and WMI provide a way to manage Exchange 2000 and 2003. They might not be as comprehensive as the native 2007 implementation but still can be a great solution while you are still on 2003.
